The
Mustdyke Walkway & Roman Road at Flag Fen |

The Mustdyke Walkway
When the timbers of Flag Fen were
first discovered in 1982 they were revealed along an 80 metre
length of the Mustdyke. Once they had been excavated and removed
they left behind them a metre-wide step, which was used as
the basis for the modern timber walkway. At the north end
of this walkway is a display about Fenland water levels. Walk
south along the walkway and you will pass under the the Roman
road shelter. This is the best place to view the Roman road.

The
Roman Road
The Fen Causeway was the only major
Roman road constructed across the Fens. It was constructed in
the mid-1st Century, shortly after the Roman Conquest of AD
43. Like many smaller Roman roads, it was built in short, straight
lengths, probably under direct military supervision. The Fen
Causeway branches off Ermine Street (the Great North Road) just
north of the town of Durobrivae. After crossing the southern
Fens the Fen causeway joined the Roman road network of East
Anglia at Denver, in Norfolk. |
