Projects that funds are required for

Improved Museum Building

The existing museum is now inadequate in size and the levels of information it contains. So we are asking consultants to carry out feasibility work to decide the best way to improve it.

Where we are at:
We are asking consultants to carry out feasibility work to decide the best way forward, for instance do we extend the museum in the existing building or build a separate building.  We also want to do some market research work to find out what our visitors, both current and potential think about the site, what they would like to see, how they would learn from it and how they would like to access it.
In addition we want to identify how best to preserve the archaeology found to date, as well as the park. This research is being funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Anglian Water. We will have the results in June 2007. We then expect to start proposals for the museum which will cost between £1m and £2m depending on the method of provision and the finishes we use.

Timescales:
The project is currently with Peterborough City Council for Planning approval, however, we are currently looking at options to avoid the roman road, so it is in our hands.  We would hope to have planning approval by early summer to allow a fundraising campaign to be planned in detail.

It is likely that this project will be three to five years before it is up and running, dependent on funding.

Archaeology Research Facility

What we want:
A research facility is required to enable us to process archaeology when it is dug up on site.  We also want to provide a facility with the capability of becoming a centre of excellence for wetland archaeology.  We plan to have a facility that will be used by specialist providing services throughout the Peterborough area, particularly to facilitate the new construction work that is planned over the next 20 years.

Where we are at:
Through Business in the Community’s (BITC) ProHelp scheme, David Smith of Waterland Associates, based in Oundle, has drawn up plans, free of charge, and these have been costed by a Quantity Surveyor.
The facility will provide a shared purpose-built laboratory with dedicated office space.  There will be a viewing area that will tell the story of the archaeological process which will at times be accessible to the public.  It is also envisaged that the area will be used for training activities.

The cost of this wonderful facility is £500,000.  A prospectus for funding has recently been put together and tentative enquiries are being made.
The next stage is to obtain planning permission.  We now have to pay for anything that is being done and funding is being sought to get us through planning permission and ready to tender.

Timescales:
The facility can be up and running in Spring 2008, if adequate funding can be found.

Children’s play area

What we want:
It would be great if our younger visitors could be entertained with a play area whilst they are on site.  Unfortunately these cost money and we are looking for a minimum of £10,000 to provide a multiplay area and the more we provide the more money it will cost.
Where we are at:
We have plans and costings from £10,000 to £30,000. The planning authority has been asked if Planning Permission is required, a response is awaited.
Timescales:
3 months to one year from funding being available.

Viewing platform

What we want:
A raised viewing platform to be installed on the alignment of the post walkway, which is the centre of Flag Fen.  There would be interpretation boards with surround landscape explained and a walkway from the platform to the preservation hall, which would be entered using a new entrance surrounded by a reconstruction of the timber causeway.
Where we are at:
Plans were carried out two years ago and costed at £50,000 - £150,000 depending on extent, quality etc.
Timescales:
One year, but fully dependent on timescales.
